In celebration of Earth Day, Google Maps Australia has unveiled new eco-friendly features aimed at promoting sustainable transportation choices, as reported by The Guardian.
The technology giant is encouraging travelers to opt for either public transport or walking when possible.
For those who still need to drive, Google Maps will guide them towards more fuel-efficient routes.
Additionally, electric vehicle owners will be directed to nearby car charging stations, in a bid to promote the adoption of electric cars.
Utilizing artificial intelligence, the fuel-efficient routes will be identified to minimize energy consumption.
Users will have the option to specify their vehicle type, allowing Google Maps to suggest alternate routes tailored to their car’s efficiency. Initially, this feature will be rolled out in select Australian cities starting from Monday.
This move follows Apple’s inclusion of electric vehicle charging station details in its mapping app back in 2022, albeit limited to certain high-end vehicles in the United States.
Andrew Foster, director of Google Maps, emphasized that these new tools aim to reduce harmful emissions and promote healthy practices like walking.
He stated, “By encouraging people to consider more environmentally friendly options, we are furthering our commitment to safeguarding the environment and fostering partnerships with local transport authorities to enhance public transport accessibility and provide real-time information.
