Alia Bhatt shone at the 2024 Met Gala, stealing the limelight in a custom mint-green saree by Sabyasachi that perfectly embodied the event’s theme, “The Garden of Time.”
Inspired by JG Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name, which explores the concept of fleeting beauty, Alia’s attire featured exquisite handcrafted embroidery, silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones, drawing from the enchanting tale of Count Axel and his wife.
Expressing her anticipation for the event, Alia highlighted the saree’s ethereal essence, a reflection of both Ballard’s whimsical garden and the timeless artistry of saree-making.
She commended Sabyasachi for seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde design, making his creation a fitting choice for the Met Gala’s theme.
The saree’s show-stopping element was its dramatic 23-foot train, meticulously crafted by a team of 163 artisans over 1,965 hours.
Drawing inspiration from India’s cultural heritage, Sabyasachi adorned the ensemble with emeralds, Basra pearls, tourmalines, and multi-colored sapphires, elevating Alia’s appearance to unparalleled heights.
Alia’s hair was adorned with an intricate headpiece featuring gemstone ropes, complemented by shoulder-grazing earrings adorned with tourmalines and diamonds from Sabyasachi Accessories. This marked the second time a Sabyasachi creation graced the Met Gala, following Natasha Poonawalla’s saree in 2022.
Reflecting on his creation, Sabyasachi expressed pride in showcasing India’s rich craftsmanship on a global platform, reaffirming his commitment to preserving traditional techniques.
