In the first three months of 2024, the iPhone 15 Pro Max from Apple was the most popular smartphone, according to a report. Apple and Samsung were the dominant players in the top 10 best-selling smartphones during that time, with each company claiming five spots. All of the top 10 smartphones were capable of 5G, which was a first for this quarter, as noted by Counterpoint Research.

The iPhone 15 series took the top three positions, with the iPhone 15 Plus ranking eighth. The iPhone 14 was another top performer for Apple, securing the fourth spot. Samsung’s top performer was the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which came in fifth, while the base Galaxy S24 model ranked ninth.

Additionally, three other Samsung models – the Galaxy A15 5G, Galaxy A54, and Galaxy A34 – were placed sixth, seventh, and tenth, respectively.

Counterpoint Research pointed out that consumers are keeping their smartphones for longer periods due to limited differences in features with upgrades. This trend leads consumers to opt for high-end smartphones to ensure their devices remain technologically relevant for a longer time.

A separate study by Counterpoint Research revealed that global smartphone revenue reached a new high in the first quarter of 2024, led by Apple and boosted by increased sales in key regions worldwide. However, the actual revenue value wasn’t provided. Industry analysts estimate that Apple’s iPhone sales in the first quarter were around $69.7 billion. Apple commanded 41% of the revenue share in the first quarter, with an average selling price of $900, up from $880 a year ago.

Samsung Electronics secured the second position with an 18% share of revenue, followed by Xiaomi and Oppo, each with a 6% share, and Vivo with 4%. Their average selling prices were $336, $159, $257, and $211, respectively.

According to the latest report by Counterpoint, the trend towards premium smartphones was evident, with seven out of the top 10 smartphones falling into that category, priced at $600 and above wholesale.

The report anticipates that as original equipment manufacturers focus on streamlined portfolios with premium features, including Generative AI, the top 10 best-selling smartphones will capture a larger share of total smartphone sales.

For the first time in Apple’s non-seasonal quarter, the Pro Max variant claimed the top position, reflecting a growing consumer preference for high-end smartphones. Counterpoint’s study noted the increasing popularity of Apple’s Pro lineup, which accounted for half of Apple’s total sales in the first quarter of 2024, up significantly from 24% in the same period in 2020.

The consultancy highlighted that the Pro iPhones have become significant revenue drivers for Apple, contributing over 60% of its sales value in the first quarter of the year, as consumers are willing to pay for premium features.

On the other hand, Samsung’s strong performance with the S24 series can be attributed to the company’s early refresh of the series and its focus on generative AI technology. The S24 series was the first to introduce GenAI features and capabilities to the market, enabling users to create unique content and experience a new level of interaction with their smartphones.
