Greta Gerwig’s jury at the Cannes Film Festival

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will see an eight-member jury led by Greta Gerwig determining the recipient of the prestigious Palme d’Or award. Gerwig, aged 40, rose to prominence as an actress in independent cinema before achieving mainstream success with “Barbie,” the first female-directed film to surpass $1 billion at the box office.

Notably, she co-wrote “Frances Ha” with her husband, director Noah Baumbach, before making her directorial debut with “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2020). Her next project involves adapting “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

Omar Sy, 46, a French icon, gained international recognition through Netflix’s “Lupin” after his breakthrough performance in the 2011 hit “The Intouchables,” for which he won a Cesar Award. He made an appearance at Cannes in 2022 with “Father and Soldier,” a film depicting African soldiers during World War I.

Eva Green, aged 43, was discovered by Bernardo Bertolucci for her role in the provocative film “The Dreamers” (2003). Since then, she has become known for her roles in gothic and historical epics like “300: Rise of an Empire,” “Dark Shadows,” and “Kingdom of Heaven.” Her portrayal of Vesper Lynd in “Casino Royale” solidified her place in cinematic history.

Lily Gladstone –

At 37, Gladstone garnered acclaim for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which premiered at Cannes last year, marking a significant breakthrough for Native American actors in Hollywood.

She previously appeared in Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women” and is set to star in Apple’s “Fancy Dance.”

Hirokazu Kore-Eda

A regular presence at Cannes, the 61-year-old Japanese director has earned numerous accolades at the festival for his poignant portrayals of ordinary families facing challenging circumstances. This includes winning the Palme d’Or in 2018 for “Shoplifters” and receiving the best screenplay award for last year’s “Monster.”

Pierfrancesco Favino

Favino, 54, ranks among Italy’s leading actors, notably portraying a mafia boss-turned-informant in the 2019 Cannes selection “The Traitor.” He clinched the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival the following year for his role in “Padrenostro,” a film depicting a father targeted by left-wing terrorists. His upcoming project involves starring alongside Angelina Jolie in the Maria Callas biopic “Maria.”

Juan Antonio Bayona

The 49-year-old Spanish director earned an Oscar nomination for “Society of the Snow,” a film centered on the survivors of a plane crash in the Andes, which garnered 12 Goya Awards in Spain.

Bayona’s previous works include the acclaimed horror film “The Orphanage” and “The Impossible,” depicting the 2004 Asian tsunami and starring Naomi Watts.

Ebru Ceylan

Renowned for her photography and art direction, Ceylan, 48, is recognized for her collaborative efforts with her husband, director Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

Together, they co-wrote films such as “Three Monkeys” (2008), “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” (2011), and the Palme d’Or-winning “Winter Sleep” (2014).

Nadine Labaki

Labaki, 50, achieved acclaim with “Capernaum,” earning the third-place Jury Prize in 2018 for its portrayal of an abused child suing his parents.

The Lebanese director has a longstanding association with Cannes, having won a residency at the festival in 2004 to develop her film “Caramel,” which became a major international success for Lebanese cinema.
