Indonesia’s Voice of Baceprot Breaks Barriers at Glastonbury Festival

Ten years ago, three Indonesian teenage girls came together to form a metal band, using bone-crunching guitars and drums to sing about gender equality and peace.
Back then, they could hardly have imagined they would one day perform at Glastonbury.
This week, Voice of Baceprot, comprising Firda Kurnia (guitar and vocals), Widi Rahmawati (bass), and Euis Siti Aisah (drums), will make history as the first Indonesian band to grace the renowned British festival, sharing the stage with headliners Coldplay and Dua Lipa.
Their journey from a village near Garut in West Java began humbly, gaining traction with spirited covers of Rage Against the Machine and original compositions, earning a devoted following and defying gender stereotypes in Indonesia’s predominantly male music scene.
“I’m still partly in disbelief. We keep checking if it’s the real Glastonbury or a prank,” admitted Euis, 24, to AFP.
The band’s fame grew internationally, drawing praise even from stars like Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Despite criticism from conservative quarters in Indonesia regarding their gender and attire, Voice of Baceprot remained steadfast in their beliefs, responding through their music, notably with their hit ‘God, Allow Me [Please] to Play Music’, which critiques those who oppose women playing heavy music.
“We write songs based on our observations and experiences,” explained Firda.
Their ascent brought unexpected challenges, including overzealous fans invading their privacy, prompting reflections on the impact of their fame on family life.
Since their formation in 2014, Voice of Baceprot has performed at various festivals in West Java before relocating to Jakarta and adapting to virtual concerts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Now, as they prepare for their monumental Glastonbury debut, the band dreams of touring Indonesia extensively, even as international opportunities beckon.
“We truly want to tour Indonesia,” said Widi. “But we’re waiting for the right chance.”
As they build their own studio back in their hometown, Voice of Baceprot continues to inspire with their music, carving a unique path that merges activism with heavy metal, determined to make their mark both at home and on the global stage.
