Despicable Me 4’ Tops Box Office with $75 Million Opening Weekend

The animated comedy ‘Despicable Me 4’ dominated the North American box office in its debut weekend, grossing $75 million in the United States and Canada since its release on Friday, according to figures from Exhibitor Relations.

This marks a strong opening for the fourth installment in the Minions universe, featuring Will Ferrell as a new villain, placing it just behind ‘Toy Story 4’ in terms of animated series openings.

In second place with $30 million was ‘Inside Out 2’, a Disney-Pixar coming-of-age film, which had held the top spot for three consecutive weekends before being surpassed.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, an apocalyptic horror film about New Yorkers surviving an invasion by extraterrestrial creatures sensitive to sound, took third place with $21 million.

The slasher film ‘MaXXXine’, depicting a mysterious killer in Hollywood targeting an aspiring actress, secured fourth place with $6.7 million in ticket sales.

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’, the action-comedy starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, rounded out the top five with $6.5 million.

The rest of the top 10 included ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One’ ($5.5 million), ‘Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot’ ($3.2 million), ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ ($1.9 million), ‘The Bikeriders’ ($1.3 million), and ‘Kinds of Kindness’ ($860,000).
