‘Avatar’ and ‘Star Wars’ films revealed at Disney event
Disney unveiled exciting new projects at its D23 fan gathering in Anaheim on Friday, revealing the much-anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash and showcasing fresh footage from upcoming Star Wars and Pixar films.
James Cameron, the director of the Avatar franchise, took the stage to announce the title of the third installment, set for release in December 2025. Cameron hinted that the new film would defy expectations while delivering what audiences truly want.
The previous two Avatar films are among the highest-grossing movies of all time, having earned $5.2 billion combined. New images from the film, currently in production in New Zealand, depicted the blue Na’vi characters dancing around a campfire, along with floating ships and flying beasts.
Cameron promised that the film will feature heightened emotional stakes, new cultures, settings, creatures, and biomes, offering a deeper exploration of Pandora.
In addition, Disney fans got their first look at The Mandalorian and Grogu, a new Star Wars film scheduled for release in May 2026. This will be the first Star Wars movie since 2019’s controversial The Rise of Skywalker.
After a period of releasing a new Star Wars film annually, Disney had slowed production due to declining box office returns. Dave Filoni, the producer of the new film, emphasized that the studio is committed to bringing Star Wars back to the big screen.
The film, which is a spinoff from the popular streaming series The Mandalorian, will feature the beloved Baby Yoda, with footage showing him and his mercenary friend navigating a snowy planet.
On the television front, Jude Law will star in Skeleton Crew, a new series set to stream in December. The show, aimed at a younger audience, is described as being in the spirit of classic ’80s coming-of-age films like The Goonies and E.T., according to Law.
