“Laila Majnu,” starring Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary, is poised to exceed the box office earnings of the original film following its re-release on August 9, the romantic drama has already earned INR 25 million in its first three days and is on track to surpass the total earnings of its original release, according to Indian media outlets.
Directed by Sajid Ali, the film originally premiered in 2018 and brought in approximately INR 32.5 million in domestic box office revenue. The re-released version has quickly gained popularity, earning INR 25 million so far. It made INR 10 million in the first two days of its re-release, and experts predict August 11 will be the film’s most successful day.
However, “Laila Majnu” will have a limited run in theaters due to the upcoming release of several new movies on India’s Independence Day. Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s horror comedy Stree 2, Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, and John Abraham and Sharvari’s action drama Vedaa are all set to release on August 15.
Despite the brief duration of its re-release, box office experts predict that Laila Majnu will gross around INR 50 million by the end of its run. The film’s remarkable performance marks the first time a Bollywood re-release has achieved a single-day gross of INR 10 million at the box office.
Although the movie had a lackluster performance during its initial run, it has since gained cult classic status. Written by Imtiaz Ali, the film offers a modern interpretation of a classic folktale and stars Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary in leading roles.
Additionally, Triptii Dimri is reportedly being considered for the lead role in a biopic about the late Bollywood actress Parveen Babi. Indian media outlets suggest that the film, which will explore Babi’s life and career, is set to be produced soon.
