Bluesky, a social media platform launched by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has rapidly gained traction as a leading alternative to X (formerly Twitter) following a mass exodus of high-profile users.
Celebrities, journalists, and other prominent figures have flocked to Bluesky, citing increasing concerns over the rise of far-right content, hate speech, harassment, and crypto scams on X under Elon Musk’s ownership.
The migration to Bluesky has been particularly notable among Hollywood celebrities and journalists. Notable figures such as James Gunn, John Cusack, Ben Stiller, Kumail Nanjiani, Dionne Warwick, Colson Whitehead, Mara Wilson, and others have made the switch to the platform.
While some, including Matt Reeves, Edgar Wright, Christopher Miller, and Ryan Reynolds, have active Bluesky accounts, they have not posted recently.
Bluesky, which was launched in 2019 with the goal of creating an “open and decentralized” social media platform, officially became an independent company in 2021.
Under the leadership of CEO Jay Graber, Bluesky has emphasized user control over content and data. Unlike X, which operates on a centralized structure where the company retains control over user data, Bluesky’s decentralized model allows users more autonomy in managing their interactions and timelines.
As of November 2024, Bluesky boasts a rapidly growing user base, reaching 16.7 million users, up from 9 million just two months prior. The platform’s user-centric features, including more control over the content shown on timelines, have made it a strong competitor to X, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding Musk’s platform.
With its commitment to decentralization and user control, Bluesky is positioning itself as a more user-friendly and transparent alternative to the increasingly centralized and contentious X. As more high-profile users continue to migrate to Bluesky, the platform is quickly establishing itself as a potential leader in the future of social media.
