BFI Flare stands as a prominent global event celebrating queer cinema. Onir recently shared that tickets for the two-day screening of his film sold out rapidly, with the first day being fully booked almost instantly.

Expressing hope for the film to generate interest in India, he emphasized its potential to instill pride within the country and its communities.

“Pine Cone” delves into the semi-autobiographical journey of a filmmaker spanning two decades, navigating the evolving landscape of queer rights in India since 1999, leading him to question the essence of love.

Garnering acclaim at numerous film festivals, Onir believes the film’s resonance transcends borders, asserting that while it’s rooted in India’s queer narrative, its universal themes will resonate globally.

As a trailblazer in LGBTQIA+ cinema in India, Onir’s “My Brother Nikhil” (2005) notably featured Sanjay Suri and Purab Kohli portraying a gay couple, earning widespread recognition and awards. Reflecting on the film’s reception, Onir recalls how it was deemed ahead of its time, a sentiment echoed with “Pine Cone.”

Asserting the importance of broader accessibility to such narratives, Onir stresses that just as he, as a gay man, can appreciate diverse stories, so too should audiences beyond the queer community embrace “Pine Cone” for its narrative richness and human journey.
