DreamWorks Animation announced on Wednesday that “Shrek 5” is officially in development, bringing back original stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. Directed by Walt Dohrn, the movie is scheduled for release on July 1, 2026, as reported by Deadline.

Producing ‘Shrek 5’ are Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director. Eddie Murphy recently disclosed that he has begun voice recording for the film, stating, “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago.

I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”

The first ‘Shrek’ film, released in 2001, grossed $487 million worldwide and won the first Oscar in the animated feature category for DreamWorks Animation. Subsequent installments, including “Shrek 2,” which earned $928 million globally, maintained high box office success despite varying critical reception.

Although Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are confirmed to reprise their roles, the return of Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots in ‘Shrek 5’ remains uncertain.
