New Android Feature Locks Phones During Theft

Google is introducing a new AI-driven feature for Android phones aimed at preventing unauthorized access by locking devices when they are stolen. This “theft detection lock” will soon be available for smartphones running Android 10 or newer, as reported by Forbes.

Mishaal Rahman, known for sharing updates on operating systems, announced on X that this feature is currently being rolled out to a select group of users in Brazil who joined the beta program.

According to Rahman, the theft detection lock automatically secures the phone if it detects sudden movements typically associated with theft. The feature utilizes data from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to identify these suspicious motions.

Rehman noted that Google plans to expand this AI-powered feature to all Android 10 devices through Google Play Services.

This feature was initially previewed by Google in May when Suzanne Frey, Google’s Vice President of Product, Trust, and Growth, revealed that the company would be launching a new set of advanced theft protection features. These features are designed to enhance security before, during, and after a theft attempt.
